Acura's latest reveal EV SUV: A sneak peek into the new electric vehicle

Acura revealed its new electric SUV concept at Pebble Beach/Monte... Read More
In recent years, Acura has heavily emphasised performance, with its Type S models leading the charge to enhance its lineup. At the same time, the company is pushing to electrify its range, a trend seen across the automotive industry. It's no surprise that Acura’s new SUV concept, making its debut at next week’s Pebble Beach / Monterey Car Week, will be an electric vehicle with claims of being both "segment-defying" and "dynamically styled."

The concept SUV is expected to preview Acura's next-generation production EV, built on a new Honda EV architecture and produced at the East Liberty Auto Plant in Ohio. Although the Acura MDX is also manufactured in Ohio, this new EV SUV will be constructed on a dedicated platform. Current speculation suggests it could be a three-row variant of the MDX.

Beyond the MDX: Unique design features

While a variant of the MDX makes sense, the term "segment-defying" hints at a more innovative design. The teaser image suggests a vehicle with a dynamic style that goes beyond a simple MDX adaptation. Acura is unlikely to introduce a completely new badge, especially since it recently revived the ZDX name for its current EV SUV based on GM's Ultium platform.

Earlier this year at CES, Honda introduced its first EV series models, including the sleek Saloon sedan and the futuristic Space Hub minivan. These models featured Honda's "man maximum/machine minimum" (M/M) design philosophy, characterised by a low, wide exterior and spacious interior. It’s likely that Acura will incorporate elements of this approach into its new EV SUV, blending existing Acura design cues with new, EV-centric styling.

Teaser insights and upcoming reveal

The teaser image hints at a low and wide rear end, with a sloping roofline, suggesting the possibility of an MDX "coupe" variant. The concept SUV is set to officially reveal on Thursday, August 15, during Monterey Car Week.
