JSW Jetour T2-based SUV: Defender styling, Thar price, WagonR running cost?
JSW Group is preparing to launch its first SUV for the Indian market under its new automotive venture. The company is already scouting dealer partners and has even teased the SUV in a newspaper advertisement. This upcoming Jetour T2-based model will be assembled at the company’s new facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra.
The upcoming model will likely carry an estimated price band of Rs 15 lakh to Rs 30 lakh. Interestingly, the international-spec model’s styling and road presence appear inspired by the rugged design philosophy of the Land Rover Defender.
It features similar boxy proportions, upright stance and flat body panels like the Defender, which itself is a very popular car on our shores. Besides, details such as squared wheel arches, thick cladding and a flat roofline further build on the similarity. Other elements like the blacked-out pillars, a tailgate-mounted spare wheel and a vertical rear design also add up to a Defender-like appearance.
At the same time, the expected pricing means the model could fall into a bracket familiar to buyers of lifestyle SUVs such as the Mahindra Thar. If priced as per estimation, the Jetour T2-based SUV could offer a larger and more feature-rich alternative within a similar budget range.
Globally, the Jetour T2 is offered with plug-in hybrid and fully electric options, although the India-spec version is likely to use the plug-in hybrid setup. This includes a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 154 hp and 220 Nm, paired with a 26.7 kWh battery pack. The system is available with either single-motor front-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive, and offers a claimed electric-only range of 139 km.
If a substantial portion of daily driving is done in electric mode, running costs could be lower than conventional petrol vehicles. In that scenario, operating expenses may even approach those of small hatchbacks such as the Maruti Suzuki WagonR, although actual costs will depend on usage patterns and charging habits.
Inside, the SUV is expected to feature a 15.6-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument display, a panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charging, ventilated front seats and automatic climate control among other features.
