Porsche has revealed that its Taycan Turbo S has set a new record for production electric vehicles (EVs) around the Nurburgring race track by lapping it in 7 minutes and 33.350 seconds. The previous record for a production EV around the track was set by the Tesla Model S Plaid, which completed a lap around the Nurburgring in 7:35.579 in S back in September 2021.
This means that the Porsche Taycan Turbo S was over 2 seconds quicker than the Tesla Model S Plaid. The test was conducted by Porsche, with the particular Taycan bearing a few changes as compared to the standard version. First, it was equipped with Porsche’s performance package, which is available through Porsche Tequipment in Germany only, as well as Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC).
Moreover, the Taycan Turbo S was running on 21-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres, specifically designed for the racetrack, but are road-approved. While Porsche has also fitted the vehicle with a roll cage and racing seats, the company claims that there were no changes in the weight as compared to the series production version of the high-performance luxury EV. Porsche says no other changes were made to the Taycan.
“In the past, only thoroughbred super sports cars got into the 7:33 range,” says Lars Kern, motorsports racing driver, who was behind the wheel of the Taycan Turbo S that set the new lap record. “With the new performance kit I was able to push even harder, and the car was even more precise and agile to boot,” he added.
“This lap time not only shows how much potential lies in our new performance kit, but also confirms once again the sports car genes of the Taycan,” said Kevin Giek, Vice President Model Line Taycan. A full lap of the Nurburgring is 20.832 km (12.944 miles) long.
Talking about the Taycan Turbo S, it is equipped with dual electric motors that put out a combined 761 PS of max power, helping the car sprint from 0 to 100 kmph in 2.8 seconds with Launch Control, before topping out at 260 kmph. In India, Porsche retails the range-topping Taycan Turbo S at Rs 2.34 crore (ex-showroom).
