Mercedes-AMG Petronas is the lastest Formula 1 constructor to reveal its car for the 2023 F1 season that starts early next month at Bahrain GP. Mercedes has went back to an all-black livery for the next season. Team Principal Toto Wolff has revealed that the team has moved to an all-black livery to save that tiny bit of weight, with some carbon fiber elements left unpainted altogether.
The black livery was used by Mercedes F1 team in 2020 and 2021, and it will be interesting to see if it can bring back their winning ways. "Is it gonna be as fast as it looks? I hope so," said Toto Wolff at the unveiling of the 2023 car in Silverstone. The team won a total of 8 consecutive F1 Constructors' Championships from 2014 to 2021, having slipped to the third position in 2022 behind Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Ferrari.
George Russell, in his first year with the team, finished 4th in the Drivers' standings with 275 points, while 7-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton could only manage a 6th place finish. Hamilton will be looking to add an 8th World Championship to his trophy cabinet, which would make him the most celebrated driver in the motorsport ever.
As a matter of fact, no driver in F1 history has ever won a race after completing 300 race starts, with Hamilton's last win coming in Saudi Arabia in 2021. 2022 was the first time that the British driver went a whole season without a Grand Prix win. Meanwhile teammate George Russell registered his first ever win at the Brazil GP last season, and also recorded a total of 8 podium finishes.
