MotoGP 2023: Luca Marini officially departs VR46 Racing Team as Repsol Honda move looks imminent
In a move that has been considered an open secret lately, VR46 Racing Team has confirmed the departure of Luca Marini, paving the way for the Italian rider for a potential switch to the Repsol Honda squad in 2024. At the Japanese outfit, the 26-year-old will potentially be filling a Marc Marquez-shaped void as the six-time premier class champion has left the team to join Gresini Racing in 2024.
Marini, the younger brother of MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi, has spent the past two seasons with VR46, showcasing his talents on the Ducati machinery. Despite making significant progress in recent races, the 26-year-old Italian has not been able to secure a coveted Ducati ride for next year.
With speculation mounting over his future, Marini has decided to seek new opportunities, and a move to Repsol Honda is reportedly on the horizon. The official announcement of Marini's departure has sparked a flurry of speculation about his potential replacement, with several names being thrown into the mix. One of the names is Fabio Di Giannantonio who has been exceptional ever since it was announced that he’ll be making way for inbound Marquez next year at Gresini.
For Repsol Honda, the challenge of replacing a legend like Marquez would be immense, and Marini would need to put in a lot of hard work to build the motorcycle for a factory team.
The official confirmation from Repsol Honda regarding Marini’s arrival can be expected in the coming days as we head to the thrilling finale of the season in Valencia. Reigning champion Pecco Bagnaia needs to secure a 4-point advantage over title rivals in the Valencia sprint to seal his second consecutive MotoGP title.
