EV buyers rejoice! Tata Motors to double India’s charging stations to 4 lakh: Details
Tata Motors is set to expand India's EV charging infrastructure massively with a plan to more than double the number of charge points across the country. TATA.ev, the company’s electric mobility arm, has announced a major expansion, aiming to scale up the charging stations to an impressive four lakh by 2027. This move is expected to significantly boost the accessibility and convenience of EV ownership. Despite the growing EV market in India, charging infra still continues to hold back potential EV buyers.
Since 2019, the carmaker has been rolling out home and public charging solutions in collaboration with Tata Group companies. Building on its success, the company introduced the ‘Open Collaboration’ framework in 2023, joining forces with Charge Point Operators (CPOs) and Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to expand charging networks nationwide. This strategy has led to a rapid expansion of public charging stations, with the number crossing 18,000 in just 15 months. To date, TATA.ev has facilitated the installation of over 1.5 lakh home chargers, 2,500 community chargers, and 750 dealership-based charging points across 200 cities.
The company now plans to set up an additional 30,000 public chargers that will cater to all EV brands. The expansion will focus on strategic locations, including highways, metro cities, and emerging EV hubs.
Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, said “Through ‘Open Collaboration 2.0,’ we aim to grow the charging network to over 400,000 points in the next two years. This expansion will improve charging speed, reliability, and accessibility while fostering the growth of charge point operators.”
Tata Motors is also rolling out ‘TATA.ev Mega Chargers’ in key cities and highways. These chargers will be open to all EVs, but TATA.ev customers will receive priority access and preferential tariffs. In partnership with leading CPOs such as Tata Power, ChargeZone, Statiq, and Zeon, the company has already signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to deploy 500 TATA.ev Mega Chargers within the next two years.
