​10 automobile giants with manufacturing facilities in India: Tata Motors to Mercedes-Benz

The Indian automotive industry is growing rapidly and contributes significantly to the country’s GDP. In 2022, the country dethroned Japan to become the world’s third-largest automobile market, ranking only behind the US and China. There are a host of global/home-grown OEMs that have manufacturing facilities in India. Let’s take a look at 10 of them.

Tata Motors, one of the largest automotive companies in India, has a wide range of products encompassing commercial, passenger vehicles, buses, and trucks. The company has manufacturing plants in several states in India, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu.

Marut Suzuki

Maruti Suzuki is a JV between Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corporation and the Indian government. One of the largest carmakers in the world, Maruti Suzuki has several plants in India, including Haryana, Gujarat, and also sources vehicles from Toyota’s plant in Karnataka.

Mahindra & Mahindra

Mahindra & Mahindra, manufacturer of SUVs, tractors, and commercial vehicles in India, has manufacturing plants in several states across the country, including Maharashtra (Kandivali, Nashik, and Chakan), Uttarakhand, and Telangana.

Hyundai

​Hyundai Motor India, a subsidiary of the South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Group, is positioned as one of the major players in the Indian market, only behind Maruti Suzuki in terms of sales. The company has manufacturing plants in Chennai and has recently escalated the procedure to take over GM’s Talegaon plant.

Renault India is one of the leading manufacturers of hatchbacks and SUVs in India. It currently offers three cars on our shores, the Kwid, Kiger, and the Triber. The company has a manufacturing plant in Chennai, through which it recently achieved the 1 million production milestone.

Nissan Motor India, a subsidiary of the Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Corporation, is a major player in the Indian passenger car market and has a global alliance plant in Chennai with partners, Renault. The duo also utilise this plant to meet its export demands.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor, a joint venture between the Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation and the Indian company Kirloskar Group, is a major player in the Indian passenger car market. The company has two manufacturing plants in Karnataka.

Honda Cars India, a subsidiary of the Japanese automaker Honda Motor Company, is one of the leading carmakers in India. The company has manufacturing plants in Rajasthan with an annual production capacity of 1,80,000 units.

Skoda Auto Volkswagen India

Skoda Auto Volkswagen India is a wholly owned subsidiary of the German Volkswagen Group. The group has manufacturing facilities in Chakan, Pune and one in Aurangabad, where both the brands produce their vehicles. Several vehicles in the companies’ lineup share their underpinnings.

A subsidiary of the German automaker Mercedes-Benz AG, Mercedes-Benz India is a major player in the Indian luxury car market. The company has a manufacturing plant in Pune. Recently, the company made the facility its first base outside Germany to assemble EVs.
