Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday presented her sixth straight budget ahead of the Lok Sabha elections 2024, matching the record of former Prime Minister Morarji Desai. She delivered her shortest-ever speech which lasted 56 minutes.
Sitharaman met President Murmu before presenting budget
Keeping the tradition, Sitharaman ahead of presenting the budget in Parliament met President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhawan with her colleagues ministers of state Bhagwat Karad and Pankaj Chaudhary. She was seen carrying a red-coloured 'bahi khata'. The finance minister was dressed in a turquoise-coloured embroidered Kantha silk saree. (PTI)

Government to implement 3 railway corridors
Presenting the interim budget for 2024-25, FM Sitharaman said that the government will implement three major economic railway corridor programmes. She further said that government will convert 40,000 normal railway bogies to Vande Bharat standards. (PTI)
'Lakhpati Didi' target enhanced to 3 crore
Sitharaman announced expansion of the 'Lakhpati Didi' scheme for self-help group workers who earn a sustainable income of at least one lakh rupees a year. In her budget speech, Sitharaman said that the 'Lakhpati Didi' scheme, which was initially set at 2 crore women, has been enhanced to 3 crore women. (ANI)
Government boosts infrastructure spending in pre-poll budget
The finance minister announced that allocation for big infrastructure projects to be taken up in 2024-25 will be raised to Rs 11.1 lakh crore. "This would be 3.4 per cent of the GDP," she said. (PTI)

She announced that Centre will launch a scheme to help deserving sections of the middle class living in rented houses, or slums, or chawls and unauthorized colonies to buy or build their own houses. (PTI)

During her budget speech, Sitharaman said that India is negotiating bilateral investment treaties with different countries to promote foreign inflows. "For encouraging sustained foreign investment, we are negotiating bilateral investment treaties with our foreign partners, in the spirit of 'first develop India'," she said. (PTI)

Government proposes to extend tax benefits to startups
The finance minister on Thursday proposed to extend the tax benefits for startups and investments made by sovereign wealth or pension funds for one more year till March 2025. "To provide continuity in taxation, I propose to extend the date to March 31, 2025," she said. (AP)
