Of the Rs 1,800 crore Smart City Plan, work on a range of major projects will begin in phases by October this year. “Delhi will be developed into a global city and the country's first 'Smart City' will be set up to decongest the national capital and facilitate it with all modern amenities,” former urban development minister M Venkaiah Naidu had said. Delhi’s ‘Smart City Project’ is based on four major pillars, including smart water management, smart energy grid, smart education and smart health care.Magicbricks takes a closer look at some of the key concepts of the Smart City mission for the national capital:
- Smart Toilets: As many as 149 smart toilets will be constructed. The civic body will employ green technology and latest water conservation techniques such as rain-harvesting, waste management and sewage treatment plants. Apart from installing geo-tagged waste bins, the collection, transportation and disposal of waste will be fully mechanised
- Digital Screens: The national capital is set to install digital screens at all major NDMC locations to display useful information such as weather, traffic flow, suggested traffic diversions and pollution. This kind of information would be provided on a continuous basis through FM and community radio stations
- Smart Poles: This will be done by replacing street light poles with LED and also mounting CCTV cameras to enable multiple next generation digital services on revenue-sharing model
- Solar City Project: NDMC is working on a detailed proposal to increase the region’s proposed solar power generation by an additional 5 MW. Rooftop solar panels of various capacities will be installed at government offices
- Waste-to-Energy Plants: NDMC has already established three waste-to-energy plants and is going to come up with more in various localities of NDMC, resulting in recycling of waste in an eco-friendly manner for maximising power/gas output
- Multi-level Parking: A multi-level parking will come up at
Khan Market
. A mobile app will also be launched to pre-book parking space at designated locations. Apart from that, 13 roads totaling 31 km will be redesigned, including seven leading to Connaught Place. A public bike-sharing mechanism will also be evolved
- Happiness Zones: The central part of the national capital will also have open gymnasiums, cafeterias and wi-fi zones.
