Acclaimed neurologist Dr. Praveen Gupta awarded by the union health minister
Gold medallist Dr. Praveen Gupta recently got conferred with prestigious Sushruta Award by the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Mansukh Mandaviya, who was also the Chief Guest at a Health Conclave held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. These awards have been named after the father of surgery, Sushruta, whose text the ‘Sushruta Samhita’ is one of the oldest ancient treatises on medicine and surgery in the world.
Trained at nation’s premier medical institutes, AIIMS and Maulana Azad Medical College, Dr. Praveen initiated and nurtured neurosciences at Gurugram with establishment of three departments of neurology at Paras hospital, Artemis and Fortis Memorial Research Institute respectively. He also established first stroke and DBS centres in Gurgaon. He started Autologous Bone marrow transplant for CIDP in India and has executed a large series of bone marrow transplants as a potential cure for Multiple Sclerosis patients. Being the first to start solitaire stent-based thrombolysis in north India, he has continued to advance frontiers in Neurology.
While treating about 80 to 100 outpatients and 40 to 50 inpatients every day, he has been instrumental in physician training and patient education for prevention and treatment of neurological diseases. He pioneered the development of Deep brain stimulation for drug resistant Epilepsy in Asia and published the role of Topiramate in common ailments like migraine to bring new therapeutic options. He is a forerunner in dementia care which is becoming a major public health problem.
With his innovative approach, in-depth understanding of the human body, and commitment to heralding new frontiers in science, Dr. Praveen has redefined neuro-care for immense benefits to the sick and needy. His deep faith in body capacity to heal itself combined with in-depth understanding of modern medicine helped him create new paradigms for the benefits of patients and also for creating culturally relevant healing modules.
He has brought medical research to the public domain with widespread publication, radio, television and patient awareness camps on common maladies like Vitamin B12 Deficiency and Neurocysticercosis. He was part of the famous Television series ‘Fit Hai To Hit Hai’ to promote healthy living and disease prevention.
He is a patron and active member of Vision Unlimited, an NGO that provides free education, food and medical treatment to underprivileged sections of the society. Being instrumental in healing numerous patients from Afghanistan, Middle East and Africa, he has brought several international honours to our country. True to his passionate self, in times of epidemics and pandemics, Dr. Praveen has served the nation tirelessly by not just performing his duties but also by helping migrants and needy with food, clothing and medication. The Pandemic Bravery Award and Dr. BR Ambedkar Seva Ratna award stand as a testimony of his selfless service.
He has been an invited faculty in national and International seminars and has contributed many research papers in issues like headache. While his recent research focussed on developing neuroimaging techniques to facilitate treatments in stroke and multiple-sclerosis, his on-going research emphasises on neurological complications and comorbidities in COVID.
Recognized as ‘National Outstanding Citizen’ and ‘Gem of India’ for his exemplary contribution to the society, Dr. Praveen has made patient care his passion and mission with 24-hour availability to provide continuous care to patients and their families.
