Air India Express aircraft overshoots runway at Mangalore airport

MUMBAI: An

Air India Express

Boeing 737 aircraft, with 183 people on board, flying in from Dubai overshot the Mangalore airport runway during landing on Sunday evening. With the aircraft stranded off the runway, the said runway is currently shut down.

Nine years ago, on May 22, an Air India Express flight from Dubai had overshot the same runway during landing and crashed into a gorge, killing 158 out of the 160 people on board. Sunday's deja vu touch down though was carried out after a go-around. Despite that, the aircraft overshot the wet runway after touch down and came to a halt along the unpaved portion near the runway.

An Air India Express spokesperson said all passengers safe and deplaned using step ladder. ``Tailwind and wet runway with inadequate braking action has been reported,’’ said the spokesperson.

Mangalore airport is located on a hill and has a table top runway. In May 2010, the Air India Express Boeing 737 had overshot the runway threshold as the pilots attempted to take off after touch down and applying reverse thrusters to stop the aircraft. As the aircraft attempted a late take-off, it failed to lift off on time and ran off the runway, rolling down a steep hillside.
