B Capital eyes early deals as 'high-quality' startups emerge
MUMBAI: Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin led global investment firm B Capital will strengthen its bets on India where more startup founders are now building high quality businesses, a top executive said, even as the company may go slow on late-stage (big sized) deals amid an uncertain global macro-environment.
The strategy for now would be to focus on early to mid-stage investments in the range of $1-$15 million, said Karan Mohla, general partner at the firm.
"Founders in India are building high quality businesses and that's why we are doubling down on our focus on India and you will see us become a lot more active in the market," Mohla who co-leads the firm's South and Southeast Asia team told TOI in an interview. "We are cautious but optimistic on the opportunities," Mohla said.
More than half of the firm's India investments will be allotted to startups that are leveraging AI as a core technology; sectors like deep tech and climate tech will bag a sizeable share of the capital earmarked for India. "We see immense opportunity in AI-driven innovation and transformative technologies, which are reshaping industries and positioning India as a resilient market, even in the face of global macro-economic shifts," Mohla said. B Capital which counts India as a key market alongside the US has backed a clutch of local startups over the years including Meesho, PharmEasy and publicly listed BlackBuck.
B Capital had losed a $750 million fund early last year. There's enough capital available but big global funds are taking a cautious approach to investments, shying away from cutting big cheques.
