Spot gold, having risen 0.39% yesterday, is currently trading steady at $5180 as traders wait for further information and clarity on the US-Iran nuclear deal.

Yesterday, much-awaited third round of US-Iran talks concluded without a deal in Geneva. The US and Iran made good progress in the indirect talks held in two sessions, according to the Iran’s FM Araghchi. The veteran representative and negotiator of the Iranian government told that technical talks with the International Atomic Energy Agency will begin Monday in Vienna wherein technical expert reviews will aim to resolve technical issues within a specific framework. He added that next round of US-Iran talks could happen as soon as the next week.

Today's US data on deck include PPI (January).

Gold is expected to range trade ahead of crucial data week with US ISM services and manufacturin, ADP and nonfarm payroll report on tap.

Gold is getting some support from tech concerns, too.

Support is at $5140/$5100. Resistance is at $5250. Traders can buy the dips with strict stoploss, says Praveen Singh, Head of Commodities and Currencies, Mirae Asset ShareKhan.

Gold prices advanced on Friday, gaining Rs 890 to reach Rs 1,60,599 per 10 grams in futures trading, supported by renewed buying interest from traders amid firm demand in the spot market.

On the Multi Commodity Exchange, April gold contracts were trading higher by Rs 890, or 0.56 per cent, at Rs 1,60,599 per 10 grams, with a total turnover of 7,735 lots.

Market analysts attributed the upward movement in prices to the creation of fresh positions by participants.

In the international market, gold futures in New York were up by 0.26 per cent at USD 5,199.66 per ounce.

Under normal circumstances, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has aimed to update the base year at five-year intervals in line with international guidelines.

The base year for the national accounts is now being shifted from 2011–12 to 2022–23. Although the ministry has sought to follow a five-year revision cycle, the period between FY 2017–18 and FY 2021–22 was considered unsuitable for selecting a new base year.

FY 2017–18 saw the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax, a major structural reform that required time for the system to stabilise. Meanwhile, FY 2019–20 and FY 2020–21 were heavily affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

FY 2021–22 also could not be adopted as the base year because GDP growth during that period was unusually high, largely reflecting the base effect associated with the post-pandemic recovery.

Manoj Kumar Jain of Prithvi Finmart told ET that gold and silver prices are currently facing profit-taking pressure, even as market participants expect Iran may not accept the conditions set by the United States. He noted that geopolitical tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, along with profit-booking in the dollar index, helped provide support to precious metals at lower price levels.

Jain said both metals continue to show significant price swings, with silver likely to find support around $78.00 per troy ounce, while gold may maintain support near $5,055 per troy ounce on a closing basis during the week.

He expects price movements to remain volatile in the ongoing session due to fluctuations in the dollar index, developments related to the U.S.–Iran negotiations and the upcoming release of US PPI data. For the day, gold is expected to find support in the range of $5,164–5,122 per troy ounce, with resistance seen at $5,222–5,265 per troy ounce. Silver is likely to have support between $84.40 and $80.80, while resistance is projected at $90–92.40 per troy ounce.

Silver Price Today Live: Silver prices rise strongly

Silver prices registered a strong opening on the MCX on Friday, while gold also started the session in the green with relatively smaller gains, as investors monitored the latest updates on negotiations between the United States and Iran. Continued uncertainty surrounding US tariff policies also supported safe-haven demand, providing additional strength to both precious metals.

MCX gold futures for April 2026 delivery rose by more than Rs 482, or 0.3 per cent, to Rs 1,60,191 per 10 grams. Silver futures for delivery on March 5, 2026 climbed sharply by Rs 8,340, or 3.2 per cent, to Rs 2,68,009 per kilogram.

Talks between the United States and Iran on Tehran’s nuclear programme showed some signs of progress in Geneva, according to mediator Oman. However, after several hours of negotiations on Thursday, no decisive outcome emerged that would eliminate the possibility of US military action, even as a substantial military presence continues to build up in the region.

In global markets, gold prices remained broadly stable on Friday. Spot gold was nearly unchanged at $5,187.39 per ounce as of 0146 GMT, after reaching a more than three-week peak earlier in the week on Tuesday. Spot silver rose 0.6 per cent to $88.81 per ounce, continuing its upward trend after touching a three-week high on Wednesday.

Capital markets regulator Sebi on Thursday introduced changes to the method used by mutual fund schemes to determine the value of physical gold and silver holdings, requiring the adoption of polled spot prices released by recognised stock exchanges.

Under the revised framework, the spot prices used to settle physically delivered bullion derivative contracts will serve as the reference for valuing such assets. This replaces the earlier system that relied on benchmark-linked pricing.

According to a Sebi circular, the new rules will come into force from April 1, 2026. “It has been decided that with effect from April 01, 2026...the mutual funds shall value physical gold and silver by using the polled spot prices published by the recognised stock exchanges which are used for settlement of physically delivered gold and silver derivatives contracts,” Sebi stated.

At present, exchange traded funds investing in gold and silver determine the value of their holdings using the London Bullion Market Association’s AM fixing prices. These international benchmarks are then adjusted for exchange rates, freight expenses, import duties, taxes and other charges to derive domestic prices.

The revised approach, introduced in line with the Sebi (Mutual Funds) Regulations, 2026, is intended to align valuations more closely with local market realities while improving consistency and transparency.

The Association of Mutual Funds in India, working together with Sebi, will lay down a standardised framework for implementing the new valuation system.

Yesterday, spot gold took a peek above $5200 but eased to close with a gain of 0.24% at $5171. Japanese PM Takaichi nominated two reflationalist academics, who favor both fiscal and monetary supports for the economy, to join the Bank of Japan Board, which weighed on the Japanese Yen but supported gold prices.

Federal Reserve Bank of Boston President Susan Collins said interest rates are expected to stay unchanged for sometime due to improvement in the labour market as inflation risk persists, while Kansas Fed President Shmid said that the Fed's balance sheet debate was about size of reserves.

Today's US data include weekly jobless claims.

Traders will closely monitor US-Iran and US-Ukraine talks taking place in Geneva today. Ukraine talks could pave the way to a trilateral meeting with Russia in early March.

Gold, currently at $5177, is likely to take cues primarily from geopolitical factors. As noted earlier, macroeconomic backdrop is not so positive for gold in short term. Gold prices declined by Rs 539 to reach Rs 1,60,606 per 10 grams in the futures market on Thursday, reflecting weaker demand in the spot market.

On the Multi Commodity Exchange, gold contracts scheduled for April delivery slipped by Rs 539, or 0.33 per cent, to trade at Rs 1,60,606 per 10 grams, with a total business volume of 647 lots.

Market experts said the decline in domestic gold prices was influenced by subdued global market signals.

In the international market, gold futures in New York rose 0.59 per cent to USD 5,196.38 per ounce.

Silver and gold exchange-traded funds declined by as much as 3% on Thursday after both precious metals opened the session lower, as investors remained cautious amid continuing uncertainty over U.S. tariff policies and escalating tensions between the United States and Iran.

Among silver-based funds, HDFC Silver ETF and Edelweiss Silver ETF each dropped about 3% during the day. DSP Silver ETF, Motilal Oswal Silver ETF, Kotak Silver ETF, Groww Silver ETF and Tata Silver ETF registered declines of roughly 2%, while most of the remaining silver ETFs showed little movement. Overall, a large number of silver ETFs slipped by around 1%.

In the gold segment, The Wealth Company Gold ETF fell close to 2%, whereas most other gold ETFs recorded losses of about 1%.

Silver Price Today Live: Silver prices rise 2%

Prices of precious metals climbed by as much as 2 per cent in the national capital on Wednesday, with silver reaching Rs 2.77 lakh per kilogram and gold moving up to Rs 1.64 lakh per 10 grams, supported by firm global cues and continued demand for safe-haven assets.

Data from the All India Sarafa Association showed that silver prices rose by Rs 5,900, or about 2 per cent, to Rs 2,77,900 per kg (including all taxes), compared with the previous close of Rs 2,72,000 per kg on Tuesday.

Gold of 99.9 per cent purity extended its upward trend for the fifth straight session, gaining Rs 1,000, or nearly 1 per cent, to reach Rs 1,64,200 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes). In the preceding session, the metal had finished at Rs 1,63,200 per 10 grams.

Gold is widely regarded as a safe-haven asset, but a study by WhiteOak Capital Mutual Fund suggests it can also enhance portfolio returns when combined with equity and debt.

Analysing data from September 2001 to January 2026, the study found that a pure debt portfolio delivered average returns of 6.87% with volatility of 6.40%. However, adding gold and equity — such as a mix of 55% debt, 25% equity and 20% gold — lifted average returns to 11.55%, while volatility remained largely similar at 6.85%.

The study highlighted that gold, equity and debt often move differently across market cycles, helping balance portfolio performance. It also noted that modest equity allocations did not necessarily increase risk. For instance, a 90% bond–10% equity portfolio generated higher average returns of 8.09% with lower volatility than a pure debt portfolio.

WhiteOak Capital said that since consistently timing asset classes is difficult, a diversified mix may help investors achieve better risk-adjusted returns. While past trends do not ensure future outcomes, the study underscored gold’s role in building more stable long-term portfolios.

Jigar Trivedi, Senior Research Analyst at Indusind Securities, noted that silver rose past $88 per ounce, rebounding from the prior session’s decline as concerns over tariffs, geopolitical tensions and overall economic uncertainty increased interest in safe-haven assets.

However, Trivedi said the upside in precious metals could remain limited as expectations for an early round of monetary policy easing by the Federal Reserve continue to weaken.

Gold prices could find support near $5,140 per ounce and may attempt another test of the $5,244 resistance level, Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao said. He noted that the nearest resistance lies at $5,205, and a sustained move above this point could push prices into the $5,221 to $5,244 range.

On the geopolitical front, Iran and the United States are scheduled to conduct a third round of nuclear negotiations in Geneva on Thursday, Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi said.
