Gold prices firm, spotlight on US-Iran ceasefire and CPI data

Gold prices firmed on Thursday ​as a weaker US dollar ​lent support, while investors assessed the durability of ​a fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran and awaited US Consumer Price Index data.

Spot gold was up 0.9% at $4,755.99 per ounce, at 9:16 a.m. ET (1316 GMT) after ‌hitting a near ⁠three-week ⁠high in the previous session.

US gold futures edged up 0.1% to $4,781.80.

The US dollar index ​slipped. A softer dollar makes bullion more affordable for buyers using other currencies.

The dollar edged lower after sharp losses in ⁠the last session ‌as traders kept their eyes fixed on whether the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran would hold.

Despite both sides declaring victory in the five-week-old war, key ⁠disputes remain unresolved, with US President Donald Trump warning of a major escalation if Iran refuses a deal.

Consequently, crude oil is trying to stabilize, which is keeping recovery in commodities and risk assets contained.

The US President Trump has threatened action against Iran if a deal is not reached. He has ordered all US ships, aircraft, and military personnel to remain in place around Iran until the agreement on a ceasefire is fully complied with.

FOMC of minutes of March 18 meeting showed that the Fed is in ‘wait and watch mode’ as it finds employment and inflation risks becoming more balanced.

Gold currently trading at $4728 is likely to consolidate its gains ahead of the crucial US CPI report for March to be released tomorrow. Overall, the metal is expected to reach $5000 in near term. Support is at $4700/$4600. Interim resistance is at $4850, says Praveen Singh, Head of Commodities at Mirae Asset ShareKhan.

Market participants stayed cautious as they looked for clearer signals on the US–Iran ceasefire. Ongoing uncertainty around its sustainability, coupled with Israel’s actions against Hezbollah in Lebanon and Iran’s strikes on regional energy infrastructure, continued to dampen sentiment.

Gold Rate Today Live: Rising gold prices spell revenue growth for Titan

Shares of Titan Company surged nearly 7 per cent on Wednesday to touch a record high of ₹4,514 after the firm reported robust performance in its jewellery segment for the March quarter.

In its Q4FY26 business update, the company said its jewellery division recorded around 46 per cent growth compared with a year ago, even as gold prices remained elevated.

Secondary sales rose 52 per cent year-on-year, driven primarily by Tanishq, with additional support from Mia. The number of buyers increased in the high single digits during the quarter, following a largely flat trend over the previous three quarters of FY26.

Growth was also aided by higher average ticket sizes. Across product segments, studded jewellery expanded in the low-30 per cent range, plain gold jewellery saw growth in the mid-30 per cent range, while coin sales nearly tripled compared to the same period last year.

The stock gave up a portion of its intraday gains but still ended the session 6.18 per cent higher at ₹4,492.30 on the BSE.

During the quarter, Titan expanded its retail footprint by adding 27 stores across India, comprising eight Tanishq outlets, 14 Mia stores and five CaratLane locations.

In the watches segment, the company posted 7 per cent year-on-year growth, supported by a 16 per cent rise in analogue watch sales. This was partly offset by a sharp 53 per cent decline in the smartwatches category. Demand for analogue watches was led by Titan, Sonata and international brands, indicating continued interest across both premium and entry-level segments.

Gold maintained strong gains and approached a three-week high on Wednesday as improved global risk sentiment, along with a pullback in US dollar and crude oil prices, boosted demand for precious metals, Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst of Commodities at HDFC Securities, said.

The positive momentum came after an agreement reached just before a self-imposed deadline by US President Donald Trump, who confirmed a pause in military action, conditional on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran also signalled that safe passage through the Strait would be possible during the ceasefire period, further easing supply concerns.

In the overseas markets, spot gold gained USD 97.48, or 2.07 per cent, to USD 4,803.33 per ounce, while silver was trading 6 per cent higher at USD 77.33 per ounce.

Manoj Kumar Jain told ET that gold and silver are currently experiencing sharp price swings, although important support levels are likely to remain intact. In terms of trading strategy, he advised buying gold above Rs 1,51,100 with a stop loss below Rs 1,48,500, targeting Rs 1,55,000–Rs 1,56,600. For silver, he recommended buying above Rs 2,36,000 with a stop loss below Rs 2,30,000, aiming for Rs 2,42,000–Rs 2,45,000.

Gold Rate Today Live: Spot gold prices rise over 2%

Spot gold rose 2.3% to $4,811.66 per ounce by 2344 GMT, building on a 1.2% increase in the previous session, while US gold futures for June delivery advanced 3.3% to $4,840.20.

Donald Trump said Washington had agreed to pause attacks for two weeks and had received a 10-point proposal from Iran, which he described as a viable starting point for negotiations. His remarks came after earlier warnings that Tehran must reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face potential retaliation from the United States.
