Gold prices today: MCX gold jumps over 1%; June, August contracts extend gains

Gold prices traded higher in the domestic futures market on Tuesday, tracking firm global cues and improved sentiment amid easing dollar pressure and hopes of renewed geopolitical talks.

On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold futures for the June 2026 contract rose Rs 1,981, or 1.30%, to Rs 1,54,053 per 10 grams. The contract touched a high of Rs 1,54,170 and a low of Rs 1,52,700 during the session.

The August 2026 contract also gained Rs 2,024, or 1.31%, to trade at Rs 1,56,645 per 10 grams, after hitting an intraday high of Rs 1,56,855.

Spot gold was up 1.1% at $4,791.65 per ounce by 9:50 a.m. ET (1350 GMT). U.S. gold futures rose 1% to $4,815.40.

Gold Rate Today: Gold loans become India’s second-largest retail credit segment as portfolio surges

India’s gold loan portfolio has expanded 3.8 times since March 2022, emerging as the country’s second-largest retail credit segment by balance share.

According to TransUnion CIBIL’s Gold Loan Landscape Report, gold loans now make up 11.1 per cent of India’s retail credit portfolio, up from 5.9 per cent in March 2022.

The strong growth has been driven by increased borrower demand, larger loan sizes, and wider participation from different types of lenders.

The report highlighted that the average gold loan balance per account rose from Rs 1.1 lakh in March 2022 to Rs 1.9 lakh by December 2025. During the same period, origination values surged 5.1 times, while origination volumes grew 2.3 times.

Public sector banks strengthened their dominance in this segment, with their share of gold loan balances increasing from 57 per cent to 62 per cent. Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) also expanded their presence, raising their share from 7 per cent to 11 per cent.

Gold Rate Today: RBI’s SGB redemption announcement

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has declared the early redemption price for the Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) 2019–20 Series V, which was originally issued on October 15, 2019. In its latest communication, the central bank stated that investors holding this tranche can opt for premature redemption starting April 15, 2026.

As per RBI guidelines, early redemption of SGBs is allowed after the completion of five years from the date of issuance, and only on scheduled interest payment dates.

For the redemption due on April 15, 2026, the price has been set at ₹15,009 per unit. This valuation is derived from the simple average of the closing gold prices over the preceding three working days—April 9, April 10, and April 13, 2026.

At the time of issuance, the SGB 2019–20 Series V was priced at ₹3,738 per gram for online subscriptions. Based on the current redemption price, the bond delivers an absolute return of roughly 302 percent at the point of early exit.

In absolute terms, the gain works out to ₹11,271 per unit (₹15,009 minus ₹3,738), excluding interest earnings. This translates to a return of about 301.53 percent.

To illustrate, an initial investment of ₹1 lakh in this series in 2019 would now be worth approximately ₹4.02 lakh at the time of premature redemption. This calculation does not factor in the additional 2.5 percent annual interest that SGB investors receive on their original investment.

Silver Price Today: Spot silver rises 2%

Spot silver advanced 2% to $77.05 per ounce, platinum edged up 0.4% to $2,077.72, while palladium slipped 0.1% to $1,571.65.

Market expectations for US monetary policy have also shifted, with traders now assigning a 28% probability to a 25-basis-point rate cut this year, compared with roughly 12% a week earlier. Prior to the conflict, markets had anticipated two rate reductions during the year.

The US dollar hovered near a more than one-month low, making gold priced in the currency cheaper for investors using other currencies.

He added that gold may encounter resistance around the $4,850 level.

According to the All India Sarafa Association, the white metal decreased Rs 1,800, or nearly 1 per cent, to Rs 2,45,200 per kg (inclusive of all taxes) from Friday's closing level of Rs 2,47,000 per kg.

Gold of 99.9 per cent purity also edged lower by Rs 300 to Rs 1,55,000 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes). The yellow metal had finished at Rs 1,55,300 per 10 grams in the previous market session.

Gold is currently consolidating within a broader range, but short-term momentum has turned neutral to slightly bearish. For this week, immediate resistance is seen at 154,500–155,200, followed by a stronger supply zone near 158,300 (upper Bollinger Band). Gold futures declined on Monday, slipping by Rs 602 to Rs 1,52,050 per 10 grams, as weaker demand in the spot market weighed on prices.

On the Multi Commodity Exchange, contracts for June delivery were trading lower by Rs 602, or 0.39 per cent, at Rs 1,52,050 per 10 grams, with a turnover of 1,491 lots.

Market participants linked the decline to subdued global signals. In international markets, gold futures in New York edged down 0.40 per cent to USD 4,730.59 per ounce.

Manoj Kumar Jain of Prithvi Finmart told ET elevated crude oil prices, along with inflation remaining above the Federal Reserve’s target, are reducing the likelihood of interest rate cuts. He noted that the dollar index may strengthen again following the breakdown of US-Iran peace negotiations, which could cap any upside in precious metals.

“We are experiencing very high price volatility in both precious metals but silver prices could hold its key support level of $62.00 per troy ounce and gold prices could also hold $4,470.00 per troy ounce this week on a closing basis. We expect gold and silver prices to remain volatile this week amid volatility in the dollar index, volatility in crude oil prices and uncertainty on the US-Iran peace deals,” he said.

He further outlined that gold has support in the $4,740–4,680 range and resistance between $4,840 and $4,884 per troy ounce, while silver is supported at $74.00–70.70 and faces resistance at $78.80–80.40 per troy ounce in the current session. On the MCX, gold is seen finding support between Rs 1,51,100 and Rs 1,49,200, with resistance at Rs 1,53,800 to Rs 1,55,000. Silver, meanwhile, has support in the range of Rs 2,40,000 to Rs 2,34,400 and resistance between Rs 2,47,700 and Rs 2,51,000.

“We suggest waiting for some clarity on the U.S. and Iran peace deal for taking positions in gold and silver,” the analyst said.

Following Trump’s announcement, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards issued a warning that any military vessels approaching the Strait would be treated as a violation of the ceasefire and would face a strong response. The escalation comes after talks held in Islamabad over the weekend, mediated by Pakistan, failed to produce an agreement between the two sides.
