Railway Budget 2025 Highlights: Indian Railways received an allocation of Rs 2.52 lakh crore in Budget 2025-26, with Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announcing on Saturday the approval of significant projects including 17,500 general coaches, 200 Vande Bharat and 100 Amrit Bharat trains. The minister detailed at Rail Bhawan that new projects valued at Rs 4.6 lakh crore would be completed within four to five years, encompassing new lines, doubling, quadrupling, station redevelopment, and infrastructure improvements.
The manufacturing plan includes 100 Amrit Bharat, 50 Namo Bharat, and 200 Vande Bharat trains in both sleeper and chair car configurations over the next two to three years, aimed at enhancing short-distance connectivity between cities.
The minister confirmed that out of the approved 17,500 general coaches, 1,400 would be ready by March 31, with a target of 2,000 coaches for FY 2025-26. Additionally, 1,000 new flyovers have received construction approval.
By March 31, the Railways anticipates reaching a cargo capacity of 1.6 billion tonnes, positioning India as the second-largest cargo-carrying railway globally after China. Complete railway electrification is also expected by the end of this financial year.
Safety investments have seen an increase from Rs 1.08 lakh crore to Rs 1.14 lakh crore, with plans to reach Rs 1.16 lakh crore in the next financial year.
The total budget, including PPP investments, amounts to Rs 2.64 lakh crore, representing a comprehensive initiative for railway improvement.
