Steps taken to promote regional media: Secy

NEW DELHI: Information & Broadcasting secretary Apurva Chandra has said the Narendra Modi government has taken several initiatives to promote regional media.

Addressing the first media summit organised by PHD Chamber of Commerce he spoke about the power of Indian language newspapers, including their connect with the readers. "He emphasised that English may be a popular language in India and may have seeped deep into the national media psyche, but regional media was stronger and continued to grow in terms of content, readership and mass appeal," Chandra was quoted as saying in a statement.

Print media is the oldest and among the strongest segments of media and communications in the country. According to industry estimates, the sector grew by 20% in 2021. Revenue was estimated at around Rs 24,000 crore in 2022 and is expected to grow to Rs 25,000 crore in 2024.
