Stock market today: The BSE Sensex and Nifty50 commenced 2025 positively, with both indices finishing higher in volatile trading on Wednesday, driven by purchases in leading stocks. The BSE Sensex gained 368.40 points or 0.47 per cent, closing at 78,507.41 in the initial trading session of 2025, recovering from a two-day decline. During trading hours, it reached a peak of 78,756.49, up by 617.48 points or 0.79 per cent.
The NSE Nifty increased by 98.10 points or 0.41 per cent to reach 23,742.90.
The Sensex gainers included Maruti, Mahindra & Mahindra, Larsen & Toubro, Bajaj Finance, Tata Motors, IndusInd Bank, Asian Paints, Power Grid, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank.
The declining shares comprised Tata Steel, Adani Ports, Zomato, HCL Tech, State Bank of India, Hindustan Unilever and Tech Mahindra.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold equities worth Rs 4,645.22 crore on Tuesday, as per exchange records.
Asian and European financial markets remained closed for New Year celebrations.
American markets recorded losses on Tuesday.
The international oil benchmark Brent crude rose 0.88 per cent to USD 74.64 per barrel.
On Tuesday, the BSE Sensex decreased by 109.12 points or 0.14 per cent, ending at 78,139.01, whilst the Nifty marginally declined by 0.10 points to close at 23,644.80.
Throughout 2024, the Sensex increased by 5,898.75 points or 8.16 per cent, whilst the Nifty rose by 1,913.4 points or 8.80 per cent.
