Stock market today:
Nifty50 and
BSE Sensex, the Indian equity benchmark indices, experienced a decline in volatile trading conditions on Tuesday, with major bank stocks pulling down both Sensex and Nifty ahead of inflation data releases in India and the United States.
The NSE Nifty decreased by 97.65 points or 0.40 per cent to close at 24,487.40. The BSE Sensex concluded at 80,235.59, falling 368.49 points or 0.46 per cent, whilst fluctuating between 80,997.67 and 80,164.36 throughout the session.
Market participants remain attentive to the upcoming US-Russia discussions scheduled for August 15.
Among Sensex components, declining shares included Bajaj Finance, Trent, Hindustan Unilever, HDFC Bank, Eternal, Bajaj Finserv, ICICI Bank, and Bharat Electronics. Conversely, Maruti, Tech Mahindra, Mahindra & Mahindra and NTPC showed positive performance.
In Asian trading, South Korea's Kospi declined, whilst Japan's Nikkei 225, Shanghai's SSE Composite, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng finished positively. European markets showed mixed results, whilst US markets closed lower on Monday.
Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, increased by 0.18 per cent to USD 66.75 per barrel.
Foreign Institutional Investors sold equities worth Rs 1,202.65 crore on Monday, as per exchange records.
The previous session on Monday saw the Sensex rise by 746.29 points or 0.93 per cent to 80,604.08, whilst the Nifty advanced by 221.75 points or 0.91 per cent to 24,585.05.
