India has topped the list of countries receiving the highest remittances in 2022, according to the World Migration Report 2024 by United Nations agency The International Organisation for Migration. In 2022, India achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first nation to receive remittances exceeding $100 billion! India has been topping the charts of the countries that receive the maximum remittances. In 2022, the total remittances India got amounted to an impressive $111.22 billion, solidifying its position as the world's top recipient of remittances. India was the top country receiving remittances in 2010 ($53.48 billion), 2015 ($68.91 billion), and 2020 ($83.15 billion). (AI image)

In 2021, Mexico overtook China to become the world's second biggest beneficiary of international remittances, trailing only India. Mexico received over $61.10 billion in remittances in 2022. China has moved to the 3rd spot in the rankings. In 2022, China received $51 billion in remittances, down from $59.51 billion in 2020. It got $52.46 billion in 2010 and $63.94 billion in 2015. "The contraction of remittance flows to China has been attributed to multiple factors, including demographic shifts that have resulted in the shrinking of the working age population and the country's zero-COVID policy, which prevented people from travelling abroad for work," the report said.

The Philippines ranks 4th on the list of highest remittances received. In 2022, the Philippines received total remittances of $38.05 billion. This is an increase from the $21.56 billion received in 2010, $29.80 billion in 2015 and $34.88 billion in 2020. (AI image)

France ranks 5th on the list of highest remittances received, up one position from the 2020 rankings. In 2022, France received total remittances of $30.04 billion. This is an increase from the $19.90 billion received in 2010, $24.07 billion in 2015 and $28.82 billion in 2020. (AI image)

Pakistan ranks 6th in the list of top 10 countries receiving remittances. This is a rank above its place in 2020 and 2015. In 2010, Pakistan did not feature in the list of top 10 countries receiving highest remittances. Egypt ranks seventh in the list of countries getting highest remittances. Egypt received $28.33 billion in remittances in 2022. In 2010, it got $12.45 billion, in 2015 it was $18.33 billion and in 2020 it was $29.60 billion. (AI image)
