AGARTALA: At last one person were killed and two sustained injuries after a clash over
Durga Puja subscriptions in North Tripura district, police reported on Monday.
Eight individuals were arrested in connection with the Sunday incident at Kamatala market and nearby areas.
North Tripura superintendent of police Bhanupada Chakraborty stated, "One person succumbed to his bullet injury. Two others were also injured in the clash over the collection of puja subscriptions at Kadamtala. At least eight people have been arrested."
Security forces, including Assam Rifles and Tripura State Rifles (TSR), were deployed to sensitive zones in Kadamtala to control the situation. Senior police officials are also stationed in the area.
During the unrest, two houses were vandalized. Authorities imposed prohibitory orders in Kadamtala on Sunday. Dharmanagar sub-divisional magistrate Sajal Debnath enforced the curbs under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita until Wednesday to restore order.
Senior Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman criticized chief minister Manik Saha’s response to the violence, saying, "There shall be a limit for being inactive. When two persons died in clashes at Kadamtala, the chief minister was busy inaugurating Durga pujas. I appeal for maintaining peace and tranquillity," he wrote on Facebook.
