Agartala Mayor becomes BJP nominee for Ramnagar by-poll

AGARTALA: Setting aside all speculations, the BJP central leadership has nominated Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor Dipak Majumder as its candidate for the by-election to Ramnagar assembly constituency scheduled on April 19 along with the Lok Sabha election to West Tripura seat.

The BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee said the candidature of Dipak Majumder was finalized on Friday morning in a meeting of the BJP’s central election committee and the party’s National general secretary Arun Singh has communicated the selection.

The by-election to Ramnagar of Agartala city has been necessitated following the death of senior BJP leader, 7th times MLA, and former minister of Tripura Surajit Datta after prolonged suffering from kidney-related disease in December last year.

The nomination of Dipak Majumder, a popular leader of Ramnagar, has been accepted with jubilation by the party’s rank and file while the chief minister Dr Manik Saha has congratulated him and said, “Dipak Majumder will secure a victory with a record margin.”

The state BJP general secretary Amit Rakshit and outgoing MP from West Tripura, union minister Pratima Bhowmik who were also the contenders for Ramnagar by-poll have also congratulated Dipak Majumder and called upon party workers to work hard and ensure a victory for Majumder by a record margin.

“I am indebted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha who have offered me the opportunity to fight the election and I am sure people of the city would support me considering my record and performance in AMC for the last three years,” Dipak Majumder reacted on his nomination.
