BJP leader lands in Tripura to give campaign a push

Agartala: BJP’s national general secretary (organization) BL Santosh chaired a top-level meeting here on midnight Tuesday with BJP leaders of Tripura, including chief minister Dr Manik Saha and party’s state president Rajib Bhattacharjee and reviewed the party functioning for the ensuing election process.Bhattacharjee said the visit was pre-scheduled and a routine one to review the election-related activities to give the ongoing poll campaign a big push. He reviewed the organisational preparation and campaign module in the West Tripura parliamentary constituency here and in Ambassa of Dhalai district for East Tripura.However, according to party sources, BJP faced serious embarrassment with its candidate in the East Tripura (tribal reserved) seat where it put up Kriti Singh Debbarma from Chhattisgarh as its nominee. She is the elder sister of BJP’s new-found ally — the second largest party in the state assembly — Tipra Motha’s founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma.Although BJP claimed that Kriti was its candidate, Tipra Motha, while campaigning for her among the tribals said she was the party candidate supported by BJP. Saha and social welfare minister Tinku Roy have been campaigning across East Tripura seeking votes for Kriti to strengthen Modi’s hand for the third term but Motha leaders are seeking votes to induct Kriti in Modi’s team to achieve their “Greater Tipraland”.The opposition INDIA bloc has been questioning the candidature of Kriti accusing her of mismatched identity and suppressing criminal records in the affidavit. Santosh’s visit to Tripura amid candidature controversy and discontent among the leaders of both BJP’s tribal front and Tipra Motha over bringing Kriti from Chhattisgarh ignoring the locals, appears significant.Meanwhile, BJP leaders said Santosh has come to finalise the campaign schedule of their central leaders in Tripura for April 19 and 26 elections to West Tripura and East Tripura constituencies respectively.
