Duty exemption plea from Tripura govt staff worries EC

Agartala: The Election Commission has expressed concern over the increasing trend of not attending election duty on medical ground, an official said here on Wednesday.
According to reports, 20,000 officials were pulled for duty in the ensuring Lok Sabha polls scheduled on April 19 and 26 apart from 100 companies of central paramilitary personnel and more than an equal number of state police. Several officials especially ONGC and other organisations under the central govt have not yet sent the list of their officers and employees to ECI, officials said, adding that at least 10,000 civil servants are required for each of the two parliamentary constituencies.
The report said so far, more than 2,500 govt officers and employees have applied for exemption from election duty in West Tripura and about 250 have already been granted. The situation in East Tripura constituency is similar. “The ECI will take strict action if the application forms are verified and found to be incorrect on those who have submitted false information,” CEO Tripura Punit Agarwal said.
