ECI arranges facilities for 2.5k fenced-out voters

Agartala: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has made adequate arrangements for around 2,500 Indian voters living beyond the wire fencing on the India-Bangladesh border that falls under the West Tripura parliamentary constituency on April 19.An ECI official on Wednesday said, “The voters residing beyond the border fencing, around 2,000 in Sepahijala district and rest in West Tripura district, will be able to cast their votes like other voter without any hindrance on April 19.”The district election officers have already provided the polling station-wise list of such voters to BSF to facilitate their entry into the Indian side through the designated gate across barbed wire fencing between voting hours from 7am to 5pm with EPIC and they will be in the queue like other voters until their turn comes, the official added. The official said as political parties could not launch a house-to-house campaign with central government guidelines making it clear that only the persons living outside the fence on Indian soil would be allowed to get access through the fencing gate with the permission of the BSF, they resorted to a passive campaign.However, ECI officials have distributed the voter slips to each of the voters through its machinery without crossing the wire fencing. “As soon as the election notification was issued, movement along the border roads and localities was restricted to prevent cross-border movement of criminals,” the official said.In a bid to resettle about 93,000 people living outside the fence, the then Left Front govt had submitted a project to the Centre about a decade ago but it was not sanctioned and as a result, more than 5,000 people of the state have still been residing outside the fence.India has raised barbed wire fences across its 4,096km border with Bangladesh, 150 metres ahead of the zero line, in accordance with the 1971 Indira Gandhi-Mujibur Rahman pact.
