INDIA bloc seeks EC clarification on BJP candidate Kriti’s poll info

Agartala: The INDIA bloc has sought a clarification from the Election Commission of India (ECI) regarding East Tripura BJP nominee Kriti Devi Debbarman for allegedly providing inconsistent information in her candidature. It has threatened to move court unless the ECI comes up with a satisfactory reply.Talking to the media, INDIA bloc’s Tripura conveners Jitendra Chaudhury and Sudip Roy Barman alleged that Kriti Devi’s educational qualification and ST certificates and voter ID card were fabricated and demanded that all her documents be made public. They alleged that she identified herself as Kriti Devi Singh in 2018 when she contested the assembly election in Chhattisgarh. She had then stated in her affidavit that her highest educational qualification was 10th pass from Shillong in 1992. But this time, she disclosed that she had passed HSC in 1990 from the Meghalaya Board.“As per the electoral roll of Chhattisgarh, her name is Kriti Devi Singh but in Tripura, she changed her name to Kriti Devi Debbarman and is in the fray in the East Tripura constituency, where polling is scheduled on April 26,” Roy Barman alleged. He said if she changes her name in the affidavit, it must be published in the newspaper and voters need to know in which newspaper they gave the advertisement.Since East Tripura is a Scheduled Caste-reserved seat, the ECI needs to publicize the ST certificate of Kriti Devi Singh. Any citizen of India can contest elections in any constituency but the name must be on the voter list. The certified copy of that name has to be submitted to the ECI, he said.“Election is a high-level political struggle where utmost transparency and honesty needs to be maintained. But in her case, it is missing. We demand the ECI to clarify or else we shall move court. Such inconsistent and confusing information amounts to cheating the electorate,” Roy Barman said.
