AGARTALA: The Tripura government has emphasised on the cultivation and processing of horticultural produces to boost the state's rural economy and increase the export volume from the state, said agriculture and farmers' welfare minister Ratan Lal Nath after visiting Nagicherra Horticulture Research Centre.

"The Tripura government has introduced the best quality pineapple variety to the global community in its five-year rule that has increased farmers' income manifold. Tripura's pineapple have evoked a huge demand in the Middle East countries and Europe besides the big cities of India. Now, we are planning to open an auction market for pineapples in New Delhi, the harvesting of which will be started from next month," Nath said.

He, however, pointed out that the government stabilised the pineapple market at a decent price in the state too. Pineapples used to sell for Rs 1-2 per piece and during peak season, the fruits were dumped on the roadside as there were no buyers before 2018. But the situation has changed in five years and even during Covid-19 pandemic, pineapples from Tripura was exported, he added.
