government has come up with a diet to boost immunity among the urban poor: lemon juice and pineapple slices.
The state government on Wednesday launched the scheme called “programme for boosting public immunity for urban poor”, as part of which the people would be provided to them at the ward-level once a week for the next one month.
The state council of ministers in a meeting had decided to provide vitamin-C rich local seasonal fruits free of cost to the urban poor.
After the BJP-IPFT government came to power, the production of pineapples and lemons received a huge boost for past two years due to development of marketing chain with Europe and the Middle East.
The urban development department would spend over Rs 1 crore, which will directly go to the producer and a small percentage of the amount would go to the self-help groups (SHGs), said a senior official of the state horticulture department.
The SHGs have been selected for each municipal corporation and other urban bodies, along with some district and sub-divisional headquarters, which will be open for one day a week in each of the wards and distribute lemon juice and pineapple slices among people.
