Alam, who is currently posted at Sadar police station, was riding his bike in plainclothes when he spotted Shahrukh, a history-sheeter who has served a jail term, along with another man at a store. The other man was later identified as Vaibhav.

“The constable questioned the duo about their presence in the area. Not satisfied with their answer, he frisked them. Before he could get hold of the weapons they were carrying, Shahrukh fired at him, but missed. The constable tried to escape, but was hit in his thigh by the accused in the second attempt. Both men fled from the spot,” said Sadar circle officer Udairaj Singh.

For Alam’s bravery, the DGP office announced a bronze medal for him and also awarded him ‘cop of the month’ title. “He is out of danger now. Our teams are searching for the two accused and they will soon be arrested,” the circle officer said.

Last year, Agra police lost two constables in similar encounters with criminals. On April 5, crime branch constable Ajay Yadav was shot dead by two bike-borne assailants in Shamshabad. On July 29, constable Satish Chandra Yadav was shot dead in Itmad-ud-daula area by a group of thieves.
