AGRA: Congress suffered yet another humiliating defeat in

Agra

in the recently-concluded polls. This was the fifth straight assembly election when Congress couldn't even win a single constituency in the district. The last Congress candidate to have secured a constituency in Agra was Mandleshwar Singh, who had won from Kheragarh in 1996. Since then, Congress has been struggling to make a comeback.

This time, Congress candidates even fell short of the NOTA tally on four of the nine seats in the district. Besides, eight of the nine Congress candidates in Agra even lost their poll deposit -- Rs 10,000 for general candidates -- to the Election Commission (EC). As per EC rule, the treasury pockets the deposit of those candidates who fail to get a minimum of one-sixth of the total votes.

The only Congress candidate in Agra to have secured more than one-sixth of the total votes was

Ramnath Singh Sikarwar

, a Kargil war veteran who contested from Khergarh. He lost to BJP’s Bhagwan Singh Kushwaha by 36,497 votes. This was despite a roadshow by Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi.
