Police did go to the house and put shoulder to spade. Eight feet underground, they found a human skeleton, possibly of the alleged victim, Buddha Singh.

Like karma coming around after 30 years, it was a family tiff that dug up long-buried memories of the alleged murder, and led Buddha’s youngest son, Punjabi Singh, to go to police.

SHO of Musran, Vijay Singh, said on Friday: “Samples have been sent for DNA test. Further action will be taken once the findings are in.” The remains have been sent for post-mortem.

Punjabi Singh claimed that on July 1, 2024, he had an altercation with two of his three elder brothers, Pradeep Kumar and Mukesh Kumar (now in their late 50s), over money. They allegedly warned him then that they would “send him up to their father, just like in 1994”. That remark reopened old wounds and made Singh delve deep into his troubled childhood.

Punjabi Singh told police when he was nine, he saw his mother, Urmila Devi (now in her 70s), brothers Pradeep and Mukesh, and a ‘wealthy man’ Rajveer Singh, murder his dad.Rajveer used to visit his mother, leading to quarrels among his parents, Singh said.

On the night of the murder, Singh and the third brother were sent off to sleep at aneighbour’s house. Unable to get sleep there, he returned home only to see his father being strangled, he said, adding, his mother and brothers buried his father’s body in their courtyard and threatened him to remain silent.

On Thursday, Hathras DM Rahul Pandey ordered for the “body to be exhumed”. Sadar SDM Neeraj Sharma, along with police, went to the house and dug up the skeleton. Police are probing the role of some relatives as well, said sources.
