AHMEDABAD: Maahir Padmashil, 8, had just stepped out with his uncle to shop for his birthday, when on Saturday evening, a

cow attack

left his nose and leg fractured. Padmashil could neither go shopping nor celebrate his birthday, which was on Wednesday. “He is awaiting surgery and doctors say they might need to put a plate on his leg,” said Kiran Rajput, Maahir’s maternal uncle.

“We were going shopping and just when he stepped out of the house a

cow

came running, lifted and dragged him a few feet. The cow then tossed him on the ground, stepped on his leg and went away. Thankfully, the neighbours responded promptly. But by that time, my nephew was badly injured,” said Rajput.

“He suffered two fractures – one on his nose and the other on his leg. The leg injury is serious and doctors say they might need to put a plate,” Rajput added.

In another case of cow attack, about a month ago, a 57-year-old businessman had suffered a hip fracture in Saraspur.

“On August 16, I was driving my two-wheeler and braked hard on finding a cow in the middle of the road. But the cow became aggressive and hit my vehicle. I lost balance, had a fall and suffered a hip fracture,” said the victim, Ramakant Sharma. “I was bedridden for four weeks, as I was unable to sit,” he added.

The cattle nuisance control department (CNCD) of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) says it has been making intense efforts to curb the cattle menace, but the ground reality seems unchanged.

Sharma said that driving through the Old Everest crossroads in Saraspur area is perpetually risky because of the cattle menace. Rajput too said that little has been done to curb the cattle menace on CTM-Hatkeshwar Road despite repeated complaints.

When contacted, a senior official of CNCD said, “In

Hatkeshwar

, we have impounded close to 40 cattle in two drives. That apart, we have been aggressively undertaking cattle-tagging so that owners of stray cows can be held accountable.”
