90 Ahmedabad roads to get safety railings
Ahmedabad: The civic body is on a drive to put a barrier between people and danger. Under its Non-Motorized Transport Infrastructure policy, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is erecting safety railings and crash barriers on 90 stretches across the city’s seven zones. The initiative, AMC officials said, will reduce accidents, enhance pedestrian safety — especially for the elderly, disabled and children — ensure unobstructed use of sidewalks, improve traffic discipline, curb encroachments, facilitate smooth movement of emergency vehicles and address traffic congestion.
According to officials, there are also plans to install crash barriers on high-speed highways, bridges and accident-prone areas.
In the West Zone, major roads getting safety barriers include the stretch opposite Kameshwar Mahadev Temple, SP Ring Road in Makarba, the road from Parasmani Apartment to IOC Petrol Pump, the stretch from Shastrinagar to Vardan Tower, CG Road, Ashram Road, IIMA-Helmet Road, the stretch from Commerce Six Roads to CA Circle, from Stadium Circle to Sardar Patel Bawla, the Mithakhali Circle area, from Sabarmati railway station to Chandkheda Circle, from Motera Sai Temple to Koba metro station and the stretch from Visat Circle to Toll Naka.
In the Southwest and South Zones, railings and safety structures will come up in D-Mart area, Jivraj Park crossroads, Geetamandir crossroads, Parshuram junction, Shah-e-Alam area, Gomtipur, Amraiwadi, Narolvas Road and Vatva among other sensitive roads.
Roads in the Northwest Zone include the stretch from Memnagar crossroads to Sanjivani Hospital, Vastrapur Lakefront, Gurukul Road, Dhanvantari crossroads, and the RTO Technical Compound Circle. Work in the North Zone will cover Thakkarnagar Approach road, the roads to Naroda village, Dhanushdhari Nagar Road, Jahangirpura Bridge, Bapunagar crossroads area, Mahudi Cotton Road, Bapa Sitaram Chowk Road and the road from Goyal Circle to the airport. In the East Zone, railings will be installed in areas such as Viratnagar, Maninagar Road, Virat crossroads, CTM crossroads, Rakhial Bridge, Rakhial area and the Ramol police chowky area.
In all, AMC will cover 35 roads in the West Zone, 10 in the South-West Zone, 13 in the South Zone, 12 in the North Zone, seven in the Northwest Zone, five in Central Zone and eight in the East Zone. In Jodhpur Ward, 100m of railing has been installed near Riddhi Tower. A 50-m-long railing has been installed near Lotus School.
