Ahmedabad: Man held for posing as cop, checking driving licences

Ahmedabad: A 45-year-old man was booked by Bodakdev police on Thursday for allegedly posing as a police official and stopping vehicles at a traffic junction near SG Road.The complaint was filed by Tejubha Ditubha, a police constable attached to N Division traffic in the city. According to the FIR, the incident took place on Thursday between 3.30pm and midnight when Tejubha, along with TRB jawan Bharat Bhagwan and home guard Mayank Kirti, was on traffic regulation duty at the Malhar Dosa cut leading towards Hebatpur village, between Shilaj and Bhadaj circles.
Around 8pm, the team noticed an unidentified man wearing khaki trousers, a light blue shirt, and black leather boots resembling police boots. He was seen stopping passing vehicles and asking drivers for their vehicle documents and driving licences.Suspicious of his conduct, traffic personnel approached him and asked for his police ID card. The man identified himself as Bharat Senma, 45, a resident of Vadasan in Vijapur taluka of Mehsana district, and claimed he was posted at Prahladnagar police station. However, he could not produce the identity card. Upon sustained questioning, he admitted that he was not employed with the police department. Despite not holding any official post, he posed as a state servant and exercised authority by stopping vehicles and checking documents.Police said the accused lacked legal authority to perform traffic enforcement duties and had impersonated a public servant. An offence of impersonation as a public servant under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered at Bodakdev police station.
