The police department ensured the HC that the up-gradation work would be completed within one month.

A PIL in this regard was filed after two cloth merchants complained of custodial torture in city crime branch in 2011. Following this incident, the HC ordered in 2012 to bring all police stations under CCTV surveillance. However, the city crime branch was among the last police stations to be equipped with CCTV camera.

After installation of CCTV, petitioner Prakash Kapadia demanded that the state government had agreed to install 8-10 cameras in small police stations and 15 cameras in other police stations including those existing in Ahmedabad. But the number of cameras installed was less in number and the video quality was also very poor. The department had ensured the court that the problem would be redressed.

The HC is to take up further hearing on this issue in November.
