Cops, civic officials to team up for traffic issues in four cities

Gandhinagar: The state home department issued a notification on Wednesday to enhance coordination between municipal and police officials in four cities—Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Vadodara, and Surat—to address traffic management issues.
Following the Gujarat high court's order on Aug 28, 2024, the notification emphasizes the need for improved collaboration between the police department and municipal authorities to effectively implement the five E's of traffic management: engineering, enforcement, encouragement, education, and evaluation.
The notification mandates monthly review meetings chaired jointly by the police commissioner and municipal commissioner in each of the four cities to develop action plans to mitigate the movement of stray cattle and reduce accident-prone zones. Action plan reports must be submitted to the additional chief secretary (home) and the principal secretary of the urban development department.
Additionally, committees formed under the joint chairmanship of the respective deputy commissioner of police and deputy municipal commissioner will meet biweekly to review traffic management, submitting reports to their respective police and municipal commissioners.
A meeting will be held once every two months under the joint chairmanship of the ACS home and PS, UDD to review the steps initiated in the four cities.
