Mangeshkar sang over 100 famous Gujarati songs, said film historians, marking the Golden Age of Gujarati cinema with her melodious renditions.Kartikeya Bhatt, a city-based Gujarati film historian, said that like Hindi cinema, Lata worked with almost all notable music directors of Gujarati film industry between 1960 and 1980. “Avinash Vyas to Kalyanji-Anandji used her voice for some of the most memorable Gujarati film songs. Many remember ‘Mehendi…’ but the same film Mehendi Rang Lagyo (1960) starring Rajendra Kumar also had ‘Hu Harti Farti Raste Razalti Vaarta', talking about the plight of women of that era,” he said.He also pointed at ‘Tane Sachve Parvati’ from the 1963 movie Akhand Saubhagyavati and ‘Mane Gheli Gheli Joi’ from 1977 movie Kulvadhu are some other examples of hit Gujarati songs sung by her. “In fact, all three sisters – Lata, Asha and Usha – were very active in that era,” said Bhatt.The connoisseurs also pointed at very famous Yamunashtak sung by her in Gujarati and bhajans such as ‘Chalo re Hansla’ as an example of her contribution to Gujarati classics.
