First-year PG medical student found hanging in Ahmedabad college hostel
AHMEDABAD: A 26-year-old first-year MS (orthopaedics) student was found hanging in his hostel room on the campus of Dr M K Shah Medical College in Chandkheda on Sunday morning.
The deceased, Chintan Parmar, a native of Jamnagar, was staying in Room 306 of the boys' hostel located within the SMS Hospital compound. According to police, he was found hanging from a ceiling hook with a red nylon rope tied around his neck.
The incident came to light around 9.38am after Dr K M Patni from SMS Hospital alerted the police control room about a suspected suicide. Parmar was immediately rushed to the emergency ward, where doctors attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). However, he was declared dead at 10.05am.
Parth Bhabhor, Parmar's roommate and also a first-year MS (orthopaedics) student, was on duty in the hospital ward at around 3am on Sunday. After completing his shift, he rested in the ward. When he returned to the hostel room later in the morning and opened the door, he found Parmar hanging. He alerted fellow doctors, who rushed to the room, cut the rope and shifted him to the emergency ward.
Officials from Chandkheda police station reached the spot after receiving the message and conducted an inquest panchnama. A case of accidental death was registered under section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. The body has been sent for postmortem to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Police said no suicide note was recovered from the room or the deceased's belongings. "Preliminary enquiries with family members and relatives suggest that he had been under stress since he arrived here about a week ago. However, the exact reason behind the extreme step is yet to be established," a senior police officer said.
Investigators have begun analysis of Parmar's mobile phone and are questioning classmates and faculty members to determine whether academic pressure or personal issues may have played a role.
Further investigation was underway to establish the circumstances leading to the incident.
