Gujarat Vidyapith cuts several UG, PG courses this year
Ahmedabad: Gujarat Vidyapith has opened admissions for the upcoming academic year with a significantly trimmed list of programmes compared to the previous year. The university has removed multiple undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses from its offerings, signalling a major reshaping of its academic structure. At the undergraduate level, one of the most notable withdrawals is the Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) programme, which was available last year but does not feature in the admission notification this year. The Bachelor of Arts (BA) programme has also undergone major changes. Previously, students could choose from six subjects — Gujarati, Hindi, English, History, Economics and Sociology. This year, only three subjects — History, Economics and Sociology — remain available, effectively reducing the humanities options by half. The science stream has seen an even sharper contraction. Last year, the Bachelor of Science (BSc) programme included four disciplines — Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Microbiology. For the current admission cycle, Microbiology is the only subject on offer, leaving no choices for students seeking courses in pure sciences. At the postgraduate level, the MSc IT programme, which was introduced earlier, has been quietly removed as well. Although the university has not issued an official statement explaining the discontinuation of these courses, their omission from the latest admission list indicates they have been shelved.According to sources, low enrolment numbers and administrative considerations are believed to be the primary reasons behind the reduction in academic programmes. Gujarat Vidyapith is among the first institutions in the state to begin its admission process this year.
