Gujarati diaspora looks forward to announcements
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will make a historic visit to Ahmedabad on Monday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosting him at the International Kite Festival before the two heads of state hold bilateral talks in Gandhinagar. The visit has sparked optimism among the Gujarati diaspora in Germany.
An estimated 10,000 Gujaratis live in Germany as professionals, entrepreneurs, and students. The country hosts nearly a dozen Gujarati Samajs, with communities concentrated in Berlin, Munich, and Frankfurt, and smaller groups in Hamburg.
Gunjan Patel, a finance professional and community volunteer in Munich, said Germany is eyeing skilled talent, especially professionals affected by revised US visa policies. "It's a win-win for both nations. Chancellor Merz's visit is a major step toward stronger ties, and we hope for announcements that benefit Indians in Germany and those aspiring to move here," he said. Among expectations is a visa cap hike from the current 40,000, opening doors for more skilled professionals. Over the past decade, Germany has seen a steady rise in Indian students. While language barriers once kept Germany off the radar for many, it remains a preferred destination for technical education and jobs. Community members in Berlin said professionals and business owners form a 70:30 ratio, with a thriving community built over decades. Opportunities abound in engineering, technology, business, and finance, and all eyes are on the joint statement on Jan 12.
Social media posts from Gujarati Samaj-Berlin showcase cultural vibrancy — screenings of Gujarati films, Navratri and Diwali celebrations, and participation in larger Indian community events like Independence Day.
