Kanubhai Desai to lead Gujarat delegation to COP29

Gandhinagar: State minister for finance and energy, Kanubhai Desai, will lead Gujarat's delegation to the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29). The event will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from Nov 11 to Nov 22.An official statement said on Sunday that Desai will be accompanied by S J Haider, ACS, energy and petrochemicals department, and Jai Prakash Shivahare, MD GUVNL.The conference will focus on operationalising the loss and damage fund for vulnerable communities and finalising elements of the Paris Agreement, such as Article 6 related to carbon market mechanisms. Enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and post-2025 climate finance goals will be high on the agenda, the statement added.The event is organised under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and will be presided over by Mukhtar Babayev, Azerbaijan's minister of ecology and natural resources. Nearly 200 countries will take part in the summit, bringing together a diverse array of leaders, negotiators, youth representatives, and civil society actors to advance global climate commitments.Daily themes at COP29 will address crucial aspects of climate action, including finance, energy transition, human capital, biodiversity, food security, and digitalisation, the statement said.
