HC relief for MBBS grad from Nepal pursuing MD in Gujarat

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat high court on Tuesday ordered the medical education authorities not to disrupt the postgraduate studies of a medical student at Pramukh Swami Medical College in Karamsad while her permanent registration with the Gujarat Medical Council (GMC) remains pending. The student completed her MBBS from Kathmandu University in Nepal and finished her internship there in 2021-22.She obtained permanent registration with the Delhi Medical Council in 2023. After securing admission to the Doctor of Medicine course at the Karamsad college, she applied in Jan this year for permanent registration with the Gujarat Medical Council. This was done in accordance with a National Medical Commission (NMC) notice issued in Oct 2025, instructing foreign medical graduates to complete the registration process.Her postgraduate course began in Feb, but the Gujarat registration had not been granted. As Tuesday was the last day for registration, she moved the high court. During the hearing, the court was told that her application was pending with the NMC, which had to issue the necessary guidance to the GMC for processing her registration.The NMC told the court that the required procedure would be completed soon. Justice Nirzar Desai said, "The respondent National Medical Commission is directed to give necessary advice/guidance to the Gujarat Medical Council within a period of 10 days from today, and Gujarat Medical Council is directed to consider the case of the petitioner on the basis of such advice/guidance within a period of one week thereafter." "In the meantime, the petitioner may not be disturbed from studying the medical course at Medical College at Karamsad," the HC added while issuing notice to the regulating bodies, the medical college, Bhaikaka University, and the Admission Committee for Professional Postgraduate Medical Education Courses. Their replies are due by April 20, when a further hearing has been posted.
