Houses razed, woman suffers heart attack

Ahmedabad: For the past two days, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation officials, a builder’s team and the police have been forcefully demolishing houses in Sector 5 of Juna Vadaj as part of the Ramdevpir Tekra redevelopment project. On Thursday, while the demolition was going on in Ramdevpir Tekra, a local woman suffered a heart attack and had to be rushed to the Civil Hospital.This sparked anger among the locals, who came out in large numbers to protest. They took out a rally, causing traffic jams and handed a petition to the district collector. They threatened to commit suicide if the demolition was not stopped immediately.Ramdevpir Tekra slum redevelopment project is part of the Smart City Project. The entire slum was divided into six sectors. In 2016, AMC approved the tender for the redevelopment of these six sectors. “The demolition is unconstitutional. It benefits the builder and the locals disagree with the project. Many of the residents want bigger houses than those offered by the authority as compensation,” advocate Narendra Parmar, a resident said.tnn
