Man duped of Rs 36 lakh in bid to get new notes

AHMEDABAD : A Kalol resident has lodged a complaint with

Santej police in Gandhinagar

district against a woman police constable and five others for cheating of Rs 36 lakh.

Inspector of Santej police station B N Dave said: “While the woman constable Maya Patel is still at large. Her husband and brother Nirav and Chandrakant Patel have been arrested.”

According to a complaint filed by Manish Patel, he had come in contact with Maya, who is now posted in Bapunagar police station, a few years ago. “After demonetization, Maya approached Manish and offered to help him get Rs 100 notes. Manish took Rs 26 lakh to a hotel near Vaishnodevi Circle and got Rs 20 lakh in Rs 100 currency notes from her,” said a Santej police official.

Later, Manish got Rs 20 lakh from his two friends and added Rs 16 lakh of his own in Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 currency notes and asked Maya to help convert the money in Rs 100 notes. Maya allegedly asked for a 20% commission.
