Ahmedabad: A 21-year-old man belonging to the scheduled caste (SC) community on Saturday filed a complaint with Chandkheda police alleging that eight members belonging to OBC (Other Backward Class) assaulted him badly for participating in a garba ceremony at

Motera

.
Meet Hajipara, a resident of Sector 13-B, has been preparing for competitive exams and he was visiting his maternal uncle in Motera. On Friday night, there was a garba event near a temple in the locality.

Hajipara

along with his two cousins Aditya Patel, 14, and Malhar Patel,17, went to participate in the garba.
During the event, Aditya mistakenly touched one of the accused Yuvraj Thakor. Irked with this, Yuvraj began abusing Aditya after which Hajipara tried to pacify Yuvraj. This raged him even more and he began hurling caste-based abuses on Hajipara.
“When I told him not to use such a language, he used expletives used for Dalit community members and began thrashing me badly. He hit me on my face with a blunt object due to which my upper lip suffered a severe cut wound and I began bleeding severely,” said Hajipara in the complaint.
Apart from Yuvraj, his other friends, who all belong to Thakor community, kicked and punched Hajipara. They also hurled casteist slurs on Aditya saying on how Dalits could participate in the garba event organized by Thakors.
Other residents of the society rescued Hajipara from the eight men. Before leaving the place, the Thakor community members threatened to kill Hajipara and his two cousins if they would ever participate in the garba event held by Thakors.
Hajipara was taken to a private hospital in Chandkheda first from where he was shifted to Civil Hospital Asarwa area of the city.
Chankheda police registered a complaint of unlawful assembly, causing grievous hurt and criminal intimidation under

IPC

along with the sections of SC/ST (prevention of atrocities) act and Gujrat police act against the eight accused persons.
