Violence erupts during bike rally in Gujarat after India's Champions Trophy win

NEW DELHI: Police detained 11 people after a motorcycle rally celebrating India's ICC Champions Trophy victory against New Zealand turned violent in Gujarat's Gandhinagar district on Sunday night, when participants clashed with mosque-goers during Ramzan prayers.

The incident occurred around 10.30pm in Dehgam town when the rally passed by a mosque in a minority-dominated area. According to the first information report, some bikers were racing their motorcycles and honking loudly.

Approximately 15 people inside the mosque, observing Ramzan prayers, objected to the noise. They reportedly hurled abuses and attempted to attack the bikers with sticks, causing them to flee.

"Most bikers left after being attacked by persons objecting to the noise of the bike rally. Some five to six persons escaped after leaving their motorcycles behind. The accused persons damaged the two-wheelers that were left behind," said P N Vanda, deputy superintendent of police.

"We have detained 11 persons for questioning, and further investigation is underway. An FIR was registered in the wee hours of Monday," Vanda added.

Only the complainant suffered injuries, sustaining a fracture while trying to escape from the scene. No other injuries were reported in the incident.

Police filed charges against nine individuals under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). The charges include unlawful assembly, rioting, intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, and mischief causing damage to property.
