HC adjourns hearing on plea seeking ASI survey of Gyanvapi’s wuzukhana

Prayagraj: Allahabad high court on Monday adjourned till Jan 12, 2026 hearing of petition wherein an Archaeological Survey of India survey has been sought for the Gyanvapi mosque's wuzukhana (ablution) area, excluding the structure described by the Hindu side as shivling and Muslim side as a fountain.Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal adjourned the matter that is engaging attention of apex court and the interim order is also in operation. The court was hearing a civil revision petition filed by Rakhi Singh, one of the plaintiffs before a Varanasi court.Today, the court observed, "Counsel for opposite party Syed Ahmed Faizan submitted that the matter was engaging the attention of Supreme Court and next date fixed is Dec 16. In view of said fact, hearing of the case is adjourned. List this matter on Jan 12, 2026." Saurabh Tiwari, counsel for revisionist was also present during court proceedings.It may be recalled that in a matter seeking ASI survey of the wuzukhana (ablution pond) area except for the shivling inside the Gyanvapi mosque.The revision has been filed challenging the Varanasi District Judge's order dated Oct 21, 2023 refusing to direct ASI to undertake a survey of wuzukhana area except for the ‘shivling inside the Gyanvapi Mosque.Uttar Pradesh, through chief secretary, district magistrate, Varanasi police commissioner, committee of management, Anjuman Intezamia Masajid, the management committee of Gyanvapi mosque through its secretary, board of trustee of Shri Kashi Vishwanath temple through chief executive officer and director general Archeological Survey of India, New Delhi have been made respondents in the revision petition.
