AMARAVATI: A depression in the southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm and is set to make landfall near the coast between Puducherry and Nellore on the morning of October 17. The storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall to several areas of the South Coast and Rayalaseema regions.

Ronanki Kurmanath, Meteorological Department of the Andhra Pradesh Disaster Management Authority said, "A depression in the southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm which is moving in a northwest direction at a speed of 10 km/h. It is located 440 km from Chennai, 460 km from Puducherry, and 530 km from Nellore."

Kurmanath further explained that the storm would bring heavy to very heavy rainfall in many places, with some areas experiencing extremely heavy rainfall. Wind speeds along the coast are anticipated to range from 40-60 km/h. Fishermen have been advised not to venture out to sea, and the public has been urged to remain alert and take necessary precautions.

Earlier, the IMD reported that the depression was located about 490 kilometres from the east-southeast of Chennai in Tamil Nadu as of 5.30pm on Tuesday.

The IMD also stated that the depression over the west-central Arabian Sea off the Oman coast was moving northwestwards at a speed of 23 km/h and was predicted to cross the Oman coast close to Duqm during the early hours of October 16.

This weather development follows the commencement of northeast monsoon rainfall activity over southeast peninsular India.
