Punjab: Family and trustees to pay homage to Vir Abdul Hamid at Asal Uttar in Tarn Taran
AMRITSAR: For the first time in the last 58 years, all the family members along with the members and trustees of Vir Abdul Hameed Trust will be arriving at village Asal Uttar in Tarn Taran district to pay homage to the martyr Company Quarter Master Havaldar (CQMH) Abdul Hameed.
Abdul Hamid who was posthumously given Param Veer Chakra, laid down his life after pulverizing Pak army’s seemingly invincible three Paton, thus giving a befitting reply to Pak’s aggression during Indo-Pak conflict in 1965.
"My grandfather remains a driving force for the youth in our region, to join the Indian armed forces and confront our nation's adversaries to give them a befitting reply as my grandfather did during 1965 Indo-Pak conflict," said Jamil Ahmad, the proud grandson of Vir Abdul Hameed.
He informed that more than fifty persons, including family members and trustees, would arrive from Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh to Asal Uttar on September 9 to pay homage to the martyr and to offer a ‘Chadar’ (a ceremonial cloth ) at his resting place in the village Asal Uttar along with the military personnel that also holds function every year in honour of Vir Abdul Hameed.
CQMH Abdul Hamid was stationed at Asal Uttar, assuming command over a Recoilless Gun Detachment. During the critical period of 8 and 9 September in 1965, the Pakistani forces orchestrated a significant assault, spearheaded by a regiment of formidable Patton tanks, against the positions held by the 4th Grenadiers. In the face of unrelenting barrages of artillery fire and tank onslaughts, Hamid demonstrated extraordinary valor. Fearlessly navigating the battlefield, he transitioned between positions and pulverized three Patton tanks belonging to the Pakistani military. Regrettably, as he engaged the fourth tank, an enemy shell struck him fatally.
Jamil further informed that the Central government had announced to establish the Vir Abdul Hameed Paramvir Chakra Sainik School in Ghazipur for which the Trust had contributed 48 bighas of land situated along Hameed Road, adjacent to the Hameed Setu that links Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, to the Buxar district of Bihar.
