Maharashtra: Beed teenager ends life over Maratha quota, says family

AURANGABAD

: An 18-year-old boy from Kotura village in Beed committed suicide on Wednesday afternoon by hanging himself from a neem tree in his farm.


While police said he was upset with his NEET exam performance, the boy’s family claimed that he was also dejected over the Supreme Court’s recent decision to stay reservations for Marathas and that he had left a suicide note to this effect at home.

Assistant inspector Sujit Bade of the Beed rural police station told TOI on Thursday that a case of accidental death has been registered for now. The suicide note purportedly written by the boy, Vivek Rahade, which the family submitted to the police, has been sent to handwriting experts, he said. Some samples of Vivek’s written notes have also been sent to the experts.

Bade said Vivek had scored good marks in the HSC examination and was expecting to do similarly well in the NEET examination.

Police said the note states that since he belongs to a hardworking, poor farmer family, he wanted to achieve something big in life. The note further read that with the stay on Maratha reservations, his dreams have been shattered. It also said that since he could not afford medical education in a private institution, he has decided to end his life, police added.
